Helcim Review 2026

Bottom Line — Helcim Review 2026
Helcim is a Category Leader for in-person, online and invoice payments. At the sizes most small businesses run (in person up to about $47,000 a month, online up to about $31,500), DDR's cost model puts it at the lowest cost of the processors we score. The trade-offs: your cost depends on the card each customer uses, so bills are harder to predict, and new accounts can see payouts held early on.
DDR Score by how you get paid
This score is a starting point, not a verdict. Your card mix, sale size, monthly volume, and how you take payments can make a different product the right fit for you. Run your own numbers in the fee calculator before you switch. There is no contract or cancellation fee if Helcim isn't a fit.
Who Should Consider Helcim & Who Should Not?
- ✓Small businesses that want low card costs with no monthly fee or contract (in person up to about $47,000 a month)
- ✓Service businesses that invoice from QuickBooks and want card and bank-transfer payments recorded back automatically
- ✓Clients who pay large invoices by bank transfer: the fee stops at $6
- !Your cost depends on the card each customer uses (debit costs least, rewards and business cards most), so your monthly bill varies and is harder to compare with a flat rate
- !Like most processors, Helcim reviews or holds early payouts on a new account, and its terms let it keep a reserve (some of your money held back in case of refunds or disputes) at its own discretion
- !Online selling works with only one of the five major shopping carts (WooCommerce), and Helcim's pages don't mention Apple Pay or Google Pay at online checkout, or fraud tools
- ✕You sell online through Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace: Helcim has no direct integration with them (WooCommerce is the only major cart it connects to)
- ✕You need same-day or instant access to your money: card sales reach your bank account in 1 to 2 business days, and customers' bank-transfer payments in 3 to 5, with no faster option

- +In person: interchange rate (roughly 1% to 3%, based on card type) + 0.40% + 8¢, up to $50K a month in card sales. A $100 sale costs about $2.14 in DDR's model
- +Online and typed-in cards: interchange rate (roughly 1% to 3%) + 0.50% + 25¢, up to $50K a month. A $100 sale costs about $2.80
- +$50K–$100K: in person + 0.35% + 7¢; online and typed-in + 0.45% + 20¢
- +$100K–$500K: in person + 0.25% + 7¢; online and typed-in + 0.35% + 20¢
- +$500K–$1M: in person + 0.20% + 6¢; online and typed-in + 0.25% + 15¢
- +$1M–$5M: in person + 0.15% + 6¢; online and typed-in + 0.15% + 15¢ (custom pricing above $5M)
- +Customer bank transfers (ACH): 0.5% + 25¢, capped at $6
- +Tiers apply automatically from your average volume over the last three months
- +No monthly, statement, PCI (card-security compliance) or cancellation fees; no contract
How interchange plus works: every card sale carries a fee from the customer's card bank, called the interchange rate: roughly 1% to 3%, based on the card type (debit costs least; rewards, business and American Express cards most) and on whether it's tapped in person or typed in online (typed-in and online payments cost more because the fraud risk is higher). Helcim passes that fee through at cost and adds its own markup, so "interchange + 0.40% + 8¢" means the bank's fee plus Helcim's 0.40% + 8¢, not 0.40% in total. On a $100 in-person sale that comes to about $2.14 in DDR's model, and about $2.80 online. Helcim costs less than a flat 2.6% + 15¢ in person as long as your customers' cards average under about 2.3%, which most in-person businesses do; if most of your customers pay with business or rewards cards, a flat rate can cost the same or less. Helcim's own calculator gives lower estimates because it leaves out American Express and business cards. Card processing basics compares interchange plus and flat rates.
Where Helcim is cheap, and where it isn't: in DDR's cost model Helcim is the lowest-cost processor for most small-business profiles we tested. Two exceptions: in person, Stax's flat monthly membership becomes cheaper from about $47,000 a month; and for $2,500 invoices paid with business cards, Helcim is third of eight (about 1.66%), behind Zoho Payments (1.56%) and GoDaddy Payments (1.63%). Model your own mix in the fee calculator.
Keyed cards (typed in by hand) cost the same as online. Cards issued outside the US add 1.00% to 1.45%. Tap to Pay on iPhone (taking contactless payments on your phone, no reader) adds 10¢, recurring payments add 0.4%, and bank transfers over $25,000 add 0.05%. Above $5 million a month, Helcim quotes custom pricing.
Hardware: Card Reader $199; Smart Terminal $349 or $32/mo for 12 months. Fee Saver (optional) adds a 3% surcharge for customers paying by credit card, so your credit-card cost falls to $0; debit cards where the customer enters a PIN can't be surcharged (about 1.00% + 8¢), and Fee Saver isn't available in person in Connecticut, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts or Oklahoma.

Frequently Asked Questions — Helcim Review (10 Questions)
What are Helcim's fees and pricing?
Helcim charges what the card's bank charges (interchange, roughly 1% to 3% depending on the card) plus its own markup. Up to $50,000 a month that markup is 0.40% + 8¢ in person and 0.50% + 25¢ online or typed in, and it drops as volume grows. In DDR's model a $100 sale costs about $2.14 in person and $2.80 online. Customer bank transfers (ACH) cost 0.5% + 25¢, capped at $6. There is no monthly fee. Try your own numbers in the fee calculator.
What is Helcim?
Helcim is a payment processor that gives each business its own merchant account (approved individually rather than signed up instantly) and charges interchange plus a published markup that drops automatically as monthly volume grows, with no monthly fee. It covers in-person payments, online checkout, invoicing and customer bank transfers (ACH) for small and mid-sized businesses. It is based in Calgary, Alberta, with a US office in Seattle.
Does Helcim have a POS system and card reader?
Yes. Helcim's point-of-sale software is free, with inventory, tips and staff logins. Its Card Reader costs $199, and its Smart Terminal $349 or $32 a month for 12 months. You can also take contactless payments on an iPhone with Tap to Pay (10¢ more per payment than a reader). DDR's In-person score is 7.95; offline mode (taking cards when the internet is down) isn't mentioned on Helcim's pages.
What is interchange plus, and is Helcim's version cheaper?
Interchange is the fee the customer's card bank sets: low for debit, higher for rewards, business and American Express cards. Interchange plus passes that cost through and adds a published markup, so your rate changes with every card. Whether that beats a flat rate depends on your sales size, volume and card mix. Card processing basics explains both models.
Is Helcim legit?
Yes. Helcim is an established processor with published US terms and a public fee schedule, and it scores 9.0 of 10 on DDR's Company Credibility pillar. It is a Category Leader for in-person, online and invoice payments.
Does Helcim hold funds?
It can, like every processor. First payouts on a new account are reviewed, which takes about 3 business days for card sales and 7 for bank transfers. Helcim's terms let it set or raise a reserve at its discretion and keep one for at least six months after you close. Holds on new accounts are the most common complaint about payment processors in general; in DDR's review synthesis they come up less often for Helcim than for most. See how to avoid a hold.
Helcim vs Square: which costs less?
In DDR's model, Helcim usually costs less than Square's free plan for mid-sized sales at steady volume, because its markup sits on the card's actual cost. Square charges one flat price for every card, so its bill is easier to predict. It also has a free point-of-sale app and works with far more shopping carts.
Does Helcim work with QuickBooks?
Yes, through a free integration Helcim builds. Your QuickBooks invoices are copied to Helcim, which collects the payment and records it against the invoice. Refunds made in Helcim don't update the invoice. See QuickBooks payment integrations.
How fast does Helcim pay out?
Card payments arrive 1 to 2 business days after the day's sales close out, usually that evening. If your bank is on RTP or FedNow (instant-payment networks; ask your bank), they arrive the next business day at no charge. Customer bank transfers take 3 to 5 business days. Helcim doesn't offer instant payouts.
Does Helcim work with Shopify?
Not that we could find. Helcim has an official free WooCommerce plugin, but no listing for Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace. See which processors work with which carts.
The Insider's Take
Helcim earns its Category Leader tier mostly on cost and credibility. Its Cost scores are above 9.4 in person, online and on invoices. There is no monthly fee, and the published markup gets smaller on its own as you grow, which is rare among processors that pass card costs through.
