Which Payment Processors
Work With Your Shopping Cart (2026)
Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix and Squarespace against the 11 processors DDR scores: what each cart accepts, what it charges you for using an outside processor, and what its own processor costs. Every cell from the cart's own pages, dated.

Which processor should you use with your cart?
Three questions. The answer is computed from each cart's own provider list and fees and each processor's published rates, so it changes when they do.
A $60.00 sale costs $2.04 through Shopify Payments (2.9% + 30¢ on the Basic plan, no cart fee). The cheapest outside processor that connects to Shopify is PayPal at $2.02: $2.02 in processing and no Shopify fee. A few cents either way isn't a reason to choose; decide on fit, deposit timing and whether you sell other ways too.
| Processor | Connects as | Fee on a $60.00 sale |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Payments | The cart's own | $2.04 |
| PayPal | Built in · no cart fee | $2.02 |
| Authorize.net | Official plugin · +2% Shopify fee | $3.24 |
| Clover | Official plugin · +2% Shopify fee | $3.40 |
Also possible through a third-party plugin (an unaffiliated developer, usually $79 to $99 a year, with no support from the cart or the processor): Square.
Rates are each processor's published base-plan online rate and each cart's base-plan fee, read on the dates in the vendor list below. Higher cart plans lower both the cart's own rate and its fee on outside processors.
What to know before you choose
- Some carts charge you for not using their own processor. Shopify adds 2% (Basic) to 0.2% (Plus) on every order through an outside processor, even with Shopify Payments switched on. BigCommerce added a similar 2% to 0.6% fee on June 1, 2026 for providers that aren't "Embedded". Squarespace's Basic plan charges 2% on Stripe and PayPal orders. That fee comes on top of the processor's own rate, and it usually wipes out any saving from a cheaper processor.
- "Built in" and "plugin" aren't the same thing. Built in means the processor is in the cart's own payment settings. An official plugin is published by the processor and is usually free. A third-party plugin is written by an unaffiliated developer, often for a yearly fee ($79 to $99 on WooCommerce), and the cart and the processor won't support it for you.
- The cart's own processor is often the easy choice, not the cheap one. Shopify Payments, BigCommerce Payments, Wix Payments and Squarespace Payments all charge about 2.9% + 30¢ online on their base plans, the same as Stripe. The rate drops on higher plans, and you avoid the outside-processor fee. What you give up is choice: a processor with lower rates, interchange-plus pricing or one account across your website, in-person sales and invoices.
How to use this table
Start from the cart you already run; switching carts to save on processing is rarely worth it. Prefer a built-in or official connection, and consider a third-party plugin only if the processor is otherwise a clear win, since you'll depend on an unaffiliated developer for updates. For a whole month across every way you sell, the fee calculator prices all 11 processors.
If you also sell in person or by invoice, weigh one account across every channel against the convenience of the cart's own processor; the fee calculator prices one account across every channel, and credit card processing basics explains payout timing and hold terms.
