How PayPal's fees work
- A percentage plus a few cents. PayPal keeps a share of each payment plus a small fixed fee. Which rate applies depends on how your customer pays.
- PayPal and Venmo cost the most: 3.49% + 49¢. That's when the customer pays with their PayPal account, Venmo or PayPal's guest checkout, online or on an invoice.
- Cards cost less: 2.99% + 49¢ online. Businesses set up for PayPal's Advanced card processing pay 2.89% + 29¢.
- In person is cheapest: 2.29% + 9¢. For a card tapped or inserted using PayPal's point-of-sale app and reader.
- Bank transfers are capped. An invoice paid from the customer's bank account costs 1%, never more than $10.
- Customers outside the US cost more. International payments add 1.5%, and converting currency adds 3% to 4%.
Other PayPal fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Customer outside the US | +1.5% on top of the US rate |
| Currency conversion | 3% added to the exchange rate; 4% when paid in another currency for goods or services |
| Chargeback | $20.00 |
| Dispute | $15.00 standard; $30.00 for high-volume disputes |
| Instant transfer to your bank | 1.5%, $0.50 minimum (standard transfers are free without conversion) |
How the calculator works
For a $100 payment at 3.49% + 49¢, PayPal keeps $3.49 + $0.49 = $3.98. Rates come from PayPal's US business fees page, and we re-check it every month.
The "what to charge" figure is higher than the amount plus the fee, because PayPal also takes its percentage from the extra you add. Raising your price to cover the fee is common for invoices, but adding a fee at checkout can put customers off, especially if other sellers don't. Card-network rules and some state laws also limit surcharges on card payments.
